What is staff augmentation, and who is it for?

Yoong is a Vietnam-based software company founded in 2016 and headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City. Whether you need a dedicated developer team in Vietnam or individual offshore developers, we provide IT staff augmentation where senior engineers join your team and work under your direction, while Yoong handles sourcing, vetting and ongoing support. Every candidate is interviewed by practising senior engineers and placed on a 9-level scale (L6 to L14) across 11 competency axes before you see them. We send a qualified shortlist within 14 days, and we replace an engineer free of charge within the first 60 days if the fit is wrong.

Staff augmentation adds engineers to your existing team for as long as you need them. You set the priorities, run the sprints and own the product. Yoong finds, vets and supports the engineers.

It suits you if
  • You have a product owner or tech lead who can direct the work day to day.
  • You need senior capacity faster than a local hiring process allows.
  • You want to keep control of the roadmap, the code and the way the team works.
  • Your team is in Europe, the US or another region and can share part of the working day with Vietnam.
Probably not the right fit if

You want a vendor to own delivery of a fixed scope with no one on your side directing the work. In that case our project-based development service is the better choice.

How does Yoong staff augmentation work?

From the first call to a qualified shortlist takes 14 days.

1
Scoping call 30 minutes

We learn the role, stack, seniority, team set-up and working hours you need.

2
Sourcing and vetting days 1 to 14

We search our own candidate base and the market. Practising senior engineers interview each candidate and score them on 11 competency axes, which maps to a level from L6 to L14. Only candidates who clear the bar are shortlisted.

3
Your selection

You receive the shortlist with each candidate's level and scores. You interview them and make the final decision.

4
Onboarding

The engineer starts on a date agreed with you, based on their notice period. We help set up access, tools and communication rules.

5
Ongoing support

A Yoong project coordinator meets each engineer every week, stays in regular contact with you, and handles issues early. Yoong also supports converting an engineer to your own full-time hire later if you want that.

03.

How do we vet and level engineers?

AI can screen CVs. It cannot run a deep technical interview or judge attitude and fit. Our vetting is done by people who do the job.

Vetted by engineers

Interviewers are practising senior engineers, not recruiters following a script.

Two senior scorers

Each candidate is scored by two senior engineers, so one person's opinion does not decide.

11 competency axes

For example system design and scope, technical depth, autonomy and ownership, leadership and impact.

One standard scale

A backend engineer and a QA engineer can be compared on the same terms.

Level Title What they typically own Position in org
L6 Software Engineer I Small to medium features, independently Top 60%
L7 Software Engineer II Complex features, new APIs and components Top 50%
L8 Senior Engineer I Applications or services with several components Top 30%
L9 Senior Engineer II Several services, shared libraries used by many teams Top 15%
L10 Staff Engineer End-to-end architecture of a product or system Top 2 to 5%

The full scale runs from L6 to L14. You pay for the level an engineer has been verified at, not for a title on a CV.

04.

05.

Which roles and technologies can we place?

We place engineers across the delivery team, not only developers.

Role What we have placed
Software engineers Backend, frontend and full-stack on Go, Java, React, Python, Golang, .NET Core and Node.js (NestJS), web and mobile applications, microservices, AWS cloud
QA and testing Manual and automated testing, QA/QC
DevOps CI/CD, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, infrastructure and cloud operations
Business analysts Requirements, documentation, backlog
UI/UX designers Product design and design systems
AI and data engineers Python, AI assistants, predictive models, data pipelines and dashboards
Popular technologies & stacks we place:
React Python AWS Golang Java .NET Core Node.js TypeScript Next.js Kubernetes PostgreSQL Docker NestJS

If your stack is not listed, ask. We will tell you plainly whether we have people at the level you need before you spend time interviewing.

06.

What does it cost, and what are the terms?

You pay a monthly rate per engineer, set by verified level and stack. After the scoping call we send a written quote that shows the rate for each engineer you are considering. Rates are well below those in Western Europe and the US, and you pay for the seniority you actually get.

Term What it means
Replacement If an engineer is not a fit within the first 60 days, we replace them at no cost.
Notice period Either side can end an engagement with 30 days written notice.
Minimum engagement 3 months.
IP ownership All code and work product belong to you from the day they are created.
Confidentiality Engineers sign an NDA and work under your security policies and access controls.
Hiring an engineer directly You can convert an engineer to your own full-time hire. Yoong supports the process.
07.

How do we work across time zones?

Vietnam is UTC+7. With Central Europe, that is five to six hours ahead, which gives about three to four shared working hours in your morning (mid to late afternoon in Vietnam). We suggest using that window for stand-ups, reviews and pairing, and the rest of the day for focused work.

Shared Golden Window: 08:00 – 11:00 UTC
UTC: 09:00
🇻🇳 VN: 16:00 (UTC+7)
🇪🇺 EU: 10:00 (CET)
⚡ Shared Golden Window Active
Vietnam (UTC+7) 09:00 to 18:00 local (02:00 to 11:00 UTC)
09:00 – 18:00
Central Europe (CET, UTC+1) 09:00 to 18:00 local (08:00 to 17:00 UTC)
09:00 – 18:00
00:00 04:00 08:00 12:00 16:00 20:00 24:00 UTC

With the US, overlap is limited and usually means shifted hours for the engineer. We agree working hours with you before the engagement starts. For Asia-Pacific teams, the time difference is small.

Frequently asked questions

What is staff augmentation, and how is it different from outsourcing?

Staff augmentation adds engineers to your team and you direct their work. In outsourcing, a vendor takes a defined scope and manages delivery. With Yoong staff augmentation you set the priorities and own the product. With our project-based development service, Yoong owns delivery.

How fast can Yoong provide a shortlist and start an engineer?

You receive a qualified shortlist within 14 days. The start date depends on the chosen engineer's notice period and is agreed with you. We only promise the timeline when an engineer is truly ready, so a rare or very senior profile may take longer and we say so upfront.

How does Yoong vet engineers?

Practising senior engineers interview every candidate and score them on 11 competency axes. The score maps to one of 9 levels, L6 to L14, so candidates are comparable across roles. You see only people who have cleared the bar, with their level and scores.

What does staff augmentation with Yoong cost?

You pay a monthly rate per engineer, set by verified level and stack. After a 30-minute scoping call we send a written quote. Rates are well below those in Western Europe and the US, and you pay for the seniority you actually get.

What happens if the engineer is not a good fit?

If an engineer is not a fit within the first 60 days, we replace them at no cost. 96% of our placed engineers pass probation.

Who owns the code and intellectual property?

All code and work product belong to you from the day they are created. Engineers sign an NDA and work under your security policies and access controls.

What time zone overlap will we have?

Vietnam is UTC+7. With Central Europe that gives about three to four shared working hours in your morning, which is mid to late afternoon in Vietnam. Overlap with the US is limited and usually means shifted hours for the engineer. We agree working hours with you before the engagement starts.

What team sizes have you supported?

From a single engineer to teams of more than 20. Our dedicated teams for Dragon Capital and Axon each have 20+ engineers.

Which roles and technologies do you cover?

Software engineers from junior to tech lead, QA, DevOps, business analysts, UI/UX designers and AI and data engineers. Our engineers work mostly on .NET Core, Node.js, cloud and AI. If your stack is different, tell us and we will say plainly whether we can help.

How do you handle employment, payroll and compliance in Vietnam?

Our engineers are Yoong employees. Yoong handles their employment, payroll and local compliance, so you do not need a legal entity in Vietnam.

Can I hire an engineer directly later?

Yes. Yoong supports converting an engineer to your own full-time hire. We agree the terms with you at the start.
